A Look Back @ Full Throttle

Posted in Retro

Hands up to those who still reminisce about the good old PC-only adventure games-laden days of LucasArts? Yep, that’s a lot of you including yours truly. Even with Monkey Island and Sam And Max getting the Telltale Games treatment, it still did not capture the glory days of then. So what better way to start than to talk about how concisely-made Tim Schafer’s Full Throttle is.

The story is about a biker named Ben, who rides a bike with his posse, the Polecats, and somehow or other got wrapped up in a conspiracy involving the main motorcycle manufacturing company within the backdrop of an apocalyptic Texas. Since it’s 2009 and the game was made in 1995, I can disregard spoiler tags and warnings and just list out what makes the game really damn good:

- No stupid interface clunking on-screen. All your commands are activated by pressing and holding the left mouse button. Your actions are represented by a tattoo-like board where you have the option to look, kick, manhandle, speak, or interact with the target. Simple and keeping it thematic: that’s why it works.

- Presentation. There’s a reason why 2D sprite art is timeless. The pictures placed around this article proves why. The soundtrack from actual biker gang band The Gone Jackals also needs mentioning. I think one of my good friends in Malaysia still has the last remaining copies of the band’s album. Now THAT’S something worth bragging about.

- It’s a classic tale of an outlaw trying to stand up against all odds. With the main character being double-crossed, or being waylaid by different clans of bikers, or even attempting a destruction derby that’s actually laid out more as a puzzle than an action sequence, you would wonder how Ben shrugs it all off with just a few words and a persistent five o’clock shadow.

- Everything Ben does is relevant to his nature. He doesn’t solve puzzles using his wits. Okay, a little, but it’s all mostly from his brute strength. As soon as you use your hand on the bartender’s nosering when the game starts, you know his badassness is set in stone.

- At the same time, the zaniness of this alternate America helps make this stand out among the rest of the shooters and adventure games clogging up the mid-90s. Tell me if you’ve seen a game that features a jumbo jet-slash-giant-van filled with snarky bikers, a puzzle involving an endless stream of toy bunnies playing “Ride Of The Valkyrie”, and creepy blind bikers with yellow low-riding hogs that look like they finished a Tusken Raider audition role for a Star Wars movie. Nope, you haven’t, which means anyone who hasn’t seen or played Full Throttle are definitely missing out.

Naturally, the game almost had a sequel in the works about a decade ago, but the thing is Tim Schafer was not even involved with the alleged sequel ideas. As history unfolds, LucasArt messed up first with Full Throttle: Payback (late 1999), and messed up again with Full Throttle: Hell on Wheels (2000), with the latter being very special as to bring in someone who’s never worked on the original game.

Personally, I feel that this is for the best. I wouldn’t want something as timeless as Full Throttle ending up like later iterations of King’s Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. With that said, let’s try to find time to replay the game and even show it off to those  unfortunate enough to miss out until Brutal Legend pops up. Because that’s as close as you’re going to get to a spiritual successor to an adventure game about bikes, heavy metal, and zany personalities.
