If you’re as ticked off as I am for not being able to play the game despite buying it and preloading just before the 26 Oct release date (which had been pushed to Oct 30), there’s a loophole that you can use to get the game going without waiting one more day. I did this to my copy from Steam last night and can verify it works fine.
From Gamesync.net:
1) Make an account using the site below or any other free VPN that you wish to use https://anonymitynetwork.com/members/signup.php
2) Login to your account
3) Wait for the site to generate your PPTP password
4) Download the VPN tool for PPTP mode.
5) Run that and select a US server to connect to.
6) If you are on Vista or Windows 7 you may need to enter the PPTP password. On XP it should connect straightaway.
7) Open steam and check that Borderlands is 100% ready
8) Launch the game and you may get a command prompt that pops up then disappears, in this case restart steam and try again. Otherwise it should proceed to decrypt the game files.
9) It may then do a small 30-40MB update and then install PhysX when you try to run it.
10) Now you should be able to play the game, either set steam to offline mode or alt tab out of the game and disable the VPN. You will need to re-enable it if you close the game.
This should get you up and running. Now for the tweaks. The first thing you’ll note when starting up the game is the annoying lack of means to skip the intro videos for the publishers, developers and NVIDIA. Normally, I don’t mind watching it once for the first time (it’s part of the experience), but being unable to skip it after the second time, just ticks me off (and no, I don’t have anger management issues). So here are the tweaks from the Steam forums that should get those annoying unskippable videos gone:
1) Navigate to My Documents\My Games\Borderlands\WillowGame\Config
2) Open WillowEngine.ini
MAKE SURE YOU MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE WillowEngine.ini FILE!
3) Search for “FullScreenMovie”
4) Erase all the entries in the [FullScreenMovie] section (Do not go past the next section title, wrapped in square brackets!)
5) Make the file read only: (Right click, properties, read only)
6) Done! All you see now is the engine logos and such (much better than seeing all the other videos).
The last tweak I’ll be mentioning is the Vsync option, which is surprisingly not included in the options menu ingame. This is really annoying, as I’m getting some tearing due to having a pretty decent video card that’s running everything at max. So here’s how to turn on Vsync from the same Steam forums. There’s also a whole bunch of other options from AA to Windowed mode too where you can view here.
