Alpha Protocol: Spy Harder

Ever fancy the kind of life James Bond and Jason Bourne has, but wish to do it in a numbers-calculating and stats-counting method of playing? Obsidian Entertainment has you covered with Alpha Protocol, which is what happens when you take the aforementioned novel characters and place them in an action-RPG hybrid.

You control a seemingly average joe named Michael Thornton. You start off in a medical centre and through a chain of events, you have to fight and sneak your way out of the place. After getting through the tutorial parts of the game, it turns out that the place you’re incarcerated is the Agency, and they’ve recruited you since you’re the best at what you do (which is probably correlating to spy-related activities). You then get briefed, suited up for spy work, and get to pick which mission in a region you get to tackle first. For the preview build we got a few weeks ago, I manage to complete two missions set in the Middle East; the first one is to kill/subdue an arms dealer while the other is to plant a bug in a weapons facility.

Both these missions require me to use stealth and take down enemies as discreetly as possible. Sometimes, you’ll come across a point where you have to choose the correct method of response to determine the outcome of the situation. You don’t pick the words when conversing with people friendly or otherwise; you have to pick the manner in which to talk. You can either be suave, aggressive, or just be a jerk about it. Get flirty with the agency’s weapons expert Madison too early and she might not be so helpful when she’s your handler. Play it safe and slow, however, and she’ll warm up to you but also puts her emotions first before her job. So far when she was my handler for the “plant a bug” mission, she has been pretty helpful and hasn’t jeopardize my safety yet, but who knows how it’ll pan out in the end.

You have a set number of skills you have to utilize. You can either dedicate points you earn (via killing enemies, gathering intel, and disarming locks and other security devices) to skills like stealth, martial arts, or engineering (makes hacking easier). Each weapon type you can handle is also represented as a skill; put more points in using a shotgun and you can penetrate even the thickest of enemy armor provided you set your sights on a target for a short period of time. Put more points into using an assault rifle, and your accuracy is improved even when firing from the hip. These customization options are broad enough to suit your playstyle; if you wish to go hand-to-hand a all the time, just go forth and put more points on martial arts which let you deal more melee damage and make you resistant from enemy melee attacks.

I have to say that even for a preview build, enemies are as smart as a brick wall crushed into paste by a sledgehammer. There were many instances where enemies know that I’m hiding behind a pillar and yet they stand still and not flank me. I don’t know if there’s enough time for the developers to smarten up the A.I before the game hits first of June, but if they don’t, Alpha Protocol will be a breeze to play through for the wrong reasons. Presentation-wise, it’s also nothing to be impressed with. It’s not horrendous to look at, but it doesn’t really make you feel inspired. Plus, your character also sneaks in a funny way; imagine playing the Benny Hill theme while Michael’s sneaking and bingo: comedic gold that will surface on YouTube soon enough.

Still, my playthrough showcased Alpha Protocol’s x-factor: making choices that affect the missions you overtake, your handler’s perception of you, and the endgame decision. Hopefully when we get the full game, all of these will lead to a big payoff and make this upcoming spy jaunt a memorable one.

  9. Thanks for the ideas you have provided here. Yet another thing I would like to convey is that pc memory specifications generally go up along with other innovations in the technology. For instance, whenever new generations of processors are introduced to the market, there is certainly usually a related increase in the size and style preferences of all laptop memory and also hard drive space. This is because the software program operated by way of these processor chips will inevitably increase in power to make new know-how.
