Star Trek: Discovery takes off today with full Klingon subtitles

If you haven’t already heard, Star Trek: Discovery – a prequel to the franchise’s television debut 50 years ago — premieres worldwide on Netflix today. What you may not know is that all 15 episodes are available with Klingon subtitles. Time for fans to put all those self-study sessions to the ultimate test.

For the rest of us: “Star Trek: Discovery will follow the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. ”

There is, of course, a reason for all this (fun factor aside). Star Trek: Discovery is set 10 years before The Original Series, and with that comes a focus on the significant Federation-Klingon war. Tensions had already been brewing in what was essentially a cold war between the two races, one that ultimately ignited. We’ve seen the effects of it and now Discovery will showcase how it all happened.

This being Star Trek, there’s more to the premise than large-scale conflict. The crew and their stories play a similarly huge role, and here viewers will follow First Officer Michael Burnham as she servers aboard two ships – the USS Shenzhou and USS Discovery.

Here’s a Klingon trailer to whet your appetites with:

The first two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery are now up on Netflix, with subsequent episodes airing weekly. You could make use of the mobile app’s handy download feature to catch it on your way home, or just save it for the big screen.
