Having sneaked into the show today, there was only time for me to attend one closed door preview. With all the queuing going on for the big games, there really wasn’t any question to which it would be now would there? If there was any one MMO that has a chance to break me from my WoW habit, it’s SWTOR hands down. So, what do we see at GamesCom? Basically the same demo that they showed at E3, with the added introduction of the Sith Warrior class. Hot Damn! Still, I’ll go through the demo in case anyone haven’t really checked out the E3 presentation. I’ll recap by class.
Bounty Hunter: A ranged class. Has decent armor, heavy weapons to blow his enemies away. Ability to fight close combat as well with stuns and aoe flame thrower capabilities. This guy is your general nuke. At later levels, can develop class specific special abilities such as the classic hover in the air with laser/rocket bombardment. Nothing much else to say really, in SWTOR, the Bounty Hunter seems to be the ranged equivalent of a fighter. All out offense with seemingly decent defense too due to his high tech armor and weaponry.
Smuggler: Also a ranged class, but is the MMO equivalent of a thief or rogue. Instead of stealth however, the Smuggler makes use of a cover system. This is one of the most interesting aspects of SWTOR. When selecting a target, the game will automatically highlight possible cover locations such as behind a boulder or a tree. The Smuggler always shoots first, surprising the enemy. While not as powerful as the Bounty Hunter offensively, the cover system provides defensive bonuses so he can pick off his targets. What I’d like to know is how much the cover system will help in PvP, where people will just run up to you or around you when they know you’re there instead of just letting you benefit from cover. At close range, the smuggler uses dirty tricks – a kick to the gonads, followed up with a head shot is one of the moves shown.
Sith Warrior: Now we’re getting to the good part. Bioware unveiled the Sith Warrior class and its starting location at Korriban. Unlike the Bounty Hunter starting area of Hutta, Korriban is a brown desert planet. Draw distance here is impressive, though you can see frame rate issues and tearing a little. Still, Korriban is very much recognizable to everyone who’s played KOTOR. The Sith Warrior is basically your Dark Jedi, a melee class with Force powers, but only Force Choke has been shown thus far. Force Choke is a channeled ability. The Sith Warrior initiates battle with a launch attack and then it’s your usual light saber goodness. The look and feel is very similar to the KOTOR games, and melee animation is very very impressive. All the little passive calculations like misses and parries are played out, and it feels really alive.
For example, a Sith Warrior fighting a group of three. He faces and concentrates on one, dodges an attack from the side, and parries an overhead strike from behind with his saber (it’s not just numbers and words coming off your head). The animation flows in that sequence, not once clipping the fight or making it look forced. This level of detail to melee fights is what makes the game really enticing. However, now that we’ve seen a melee lightsaber fight, we come back to the same question that we did in KOTOR, why do you need a ranged blaster character when a Jedi or Sith in this case seem just so much more fun to play? I guess the question will only be answered when the beta phase comes around.
