GAX Newsweek: Marvel Vs. Disney Edition

Posted in Industry News

In case you haven’t been keeping up with our Twitter feeds or internet news, Disney is buying Marvel Comics for US$4 billion dollars. As this is really big news for even the videogame industry, everyone is quick to chime in. Perhaps Jimmy Wartooth might do a Friday Five on this, but in the meantime, let’s see what’s cooking on all the popular news site in the industry:

- Kotaku’s always on top of things, so they came up with an obligatory “Disney Marvel Team-Ups we’d like to see”. I’m more astonished with the speed these guys post rather than the content, faring from a Kingdom Hearts/Marvel Ultimate Alliance mash-up to a downloadable version of Marvel’s “What If” line of comics with guest stars from Disney. Seriously, are there magic fairies and gnomes covering Kotaku’s night shifts?

- For something a lot less satirical, Gamasutra did a thorough analysis on the matter. What motivated Disney to buy Marvel is the latter’s relevance in the film production business and its recent success on fares like Iron Man, as well as acquiring as much intellectual property as possible. Even Disney’s CEO, Robert A. Iger, summed up one of the reasons here:

“Marvel’s brand and its treasure trove of content will now benefit from our extraordinary reach.”

It’s not as simple as just cashing in the paycheck; complications might arise from buyouts like this.

- Gamesindustry.biz also states that Sega’s still making Iron Man games in spite of the buyout, and will proceed to do the upcoming Thor and Captain America games . Because the first game was so good.

What’s that? There’s a thread in the GAX forums about this? Discuss!
