On that note, with the exception of the hideous character model of your custom-made rocker (it’s the eyes), everyone from Judy Nails to Clive Winston look alright. Hell, even having your Xbox 360 Avatar on stage is a cool bonus.
- Party Friendly. Want to just jump in and play whatever’s playing on the game’s attract mode? Just press the yellow fret button and there you go. Even if you want to quit halfway, you can do so and the track you’re on will continue to play rather than have sounds of missed frets coming out.
- Same Instrument Play Might Be a Boon. Now there’s no need for someone to get stuck playing the bass(not that there’s anything wrong with that). Now you can get everyone playing the same instrument. Want two guitarists and two vocalists? Sure. Want four drummers filling up the room with four plastic drum sets. That’s borderlining on insanity, but if you want to, GH5 will let you. Be sure to let the neighbors know first hand, though.
- Bail Out Those Who Failed With Your Star Power. Better late than never, eh? The best part is that you can do this everytime, with no “three strikes and you’re out” stipulation tacked onto it. Of course, that does mean that some semblance of skill and teamwork challenge is thrown out the window, but you can always crank the difficulty to Expert for all members if you want the challenge.
- Great playlist. Standouts include Elton John’s “Saturday Night’s Alright(For Fighting)”, Garbage’s “Only Happy When It Rains”, and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Peter Frampton’s song gets special mention because it would elicit a number of people to ragequit due to its length, much like The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” in the first Rock Band. Still, it’s fun to play if only once.
- Music Creator Now Has Chiptunes option. So you can recreate popular tunes in 8-bit synthesizer sound. However, I have yet to find a tribute to popular Nintendo and Sega songs on the Music Downloading server of GH5.
- Celebrity List. Sure, it’s a little jarring to see Kurt Cobain playing vocals for a few rap songs here and there in GH5, but how different is that when Jimmy Hendrix was on Guitar Hero World Tour? Let’s all come to the agreement that record labels will find ways to get revenue from people beyond the grave outside of videogames.
- Song Importing Brou-Ha-Ha. Like the songs in Guitar Hero World Tour? Get ready to import some of them onto your hard drive to play them on GH5. That’s right; some. You see, Activision couldn’t get the license on most of the songs, thus if your song isn’t on the list below, you have the right to start bitching. Remember, Rock Band 2 let you import all but three of the Rock Band 1 songs (55 in total) for US$5. GH5’s song importing is US$3.50 for 35 songs. You do the math.
