Hear that? Why that’s the sound of anti-PC naysayers getting schooled thanks to recent NPD reports. Gamasutra recently stated on their NPD findings that download sales constitute 48% of the PC market during 2009; with the actual purchasing numbers equalling to 21.3 million just in the US of A.
They also listed down the list of the five biggest digital distributors in the world. If you’re surprised at who’s at number one, odds are you haven’t been on the internet much:
1) Steampowered.com
2) Direct2drive.com
3) Blizzard.com
4)EA.com
5) Worldofwarcraft.com
I’m just surprised that sites like Good Old Games and GamersGates aren’t on the top five, given the type of content that would interest the majority of hardcore old crotchety PC gamer types (mostly retro goods). Myself included.
Also, here’s the top five casual digital retailers of 2009, because casual games too help the boom of PC download sales.
1) Bigfishgames.com
2) Pogo.com
3) Gamehouse.com
4)iWin.com
5) Realarcade.com
“The popularity of social network gaming increased from Q3′09 to Q4′09 as 4.8 million more people played games on a social network in the U.S,” said NPD game analyst Anita Frazier. “This demonstrates how consumers can now experience casual types of games through myriad vehicles, broadening the competitive landscape.”
Basically, this list proofs that PC gaming is anything but unprofitable. Whether it’s fair that just one big distribution is hogging the limelight is a story for another day.
