Play It First With GAX: KOF XII – What They Said

Posted in Events

Update: We have pictures of the event. Check it out here.

When all is said and done, a few of our GAX readers had a rip-roaring good time checking out The King of Fighters XII(before its end-of-month release date) complete with Mature & Elizabeth action, Critical Counter unleashing, Billy Bomber fries and onion rings, and all-out fighting freneticism. But what did some of our lucky readers thought about the game? Well, just look below.

“Kay, overall thoughts, gameplay on the console version & arcade version is exactly the same. SNKP has introduced the CC system in XII, letting you unleash a barrage of attacks aka juggling like what you saw, which was impossible for previous versions. Graphics are spectacular compared to its predecessors.” - Delusion84

“Been playing kof since 1994. One thing for sure- over the years. SNK always dare to kick in new stuff/system from the dodge system to dash system, shadow jump, and one of their latest installation KOFXII. Another new system is in place; one of them is  the critical counter. In term of normal moves, the execution is the same. Well, a hint for all KOF fans is that they just need to get used to the huge details character artwork and the new system to enjoy the game at its peak.

Overall KOFXII gets an 8/10 . For the record, my prefered KOF Series are: KOF95, KOF97, KOF98UM, KOF2002UM. Thumbs up to GAX & Sony for the Play It First Event.” - IQKOF

“Here’s a review from me:

Graphics: 7/10. (Still prefer the old school graphics used in KOF 2002, KOF 98..and of coz the UM versions) Huge changes since the first KOF came out in 1994. Greatly improved to blend into the HD era of graphics. Vibrant colours and all. Many may compare it to that of SF4, but I guess SNKplaymore was going towards the direction of animated graphics.

Gameplay: 7/10. Much has been tweaked in KOFXII. The jumps are harder to perfect (4 types in all). and the new C+D (knockdown attack) and critical counter system leaves much room for imagination for fanciful combos. Of course, these combos are definitely beautiful but deadly. No damage scaling..every hit hurts. you can still hit your opponent in midair even after executing a move. The older KOF series didn’t have much of such juggles. And this time round there is only one level for the max gauge, so no special move spamming.

Character Roster: 6.5/10. They need more babes in the game!!! I guess they pretty much heard from the fans and thus added Mature and Elizabeth into the console versions. But where is Mai? And Blue Mary!? with a cast of only 22 characters (20 for the arcade)..it has to be one of the least number of characters ever in a KOF game.. Wish they had more console characters added..

Overall: 6.5/10 (Not an average..like what they always like to put in game reviews) (Mr. Toffee – Good one.) Still a beautiful game nonetheless. Its predecessors were great. This one fell a little short, but still remains enjoyable. For now, SF4 seems to be the better game.” – tetralite

We appreciate the feedback.  Once again, thanks for playing, and thanks to the fine folks at Ogilvy and Sony HK for doing this with us! You’ve been the best. Around. Here’s an ArcadeInfinity playthrough for more KOF XII beatdowns, just to prep you guys and gals up for online play.

No one is even playing the game when it first came out at TKA Century Square! It was until the operators brought in KOF 2002 UM then the crowd come back again. Of course, Tekken 6, BlazBlue and SF4 are still being hounded. KOF XII was left to collect dust there instead.
