San Diego Comicon ‘09: What We All Missed

- Force Unleashed Expansion looks sweet: Dubbed Ultimate Sith, there’s basically three extra levels tacked on after the end of the original Force Unleashed.

- Of Iron & Avatars: Kinda game-related, there were screenings of short bits of Avatar in 3D and also a glimpse at Iron Man 2, complete with Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau on the stage with other cast members. As expected, both of these showings have ginormous lines, with people even sitting in previous lines just to take a seat for themselves for the upcoming attractions. For instance, Twilight: New Moon’s line was only twice as long because the following presentation was Avatar. And you thought “kiasu”-ism is something that’s just here.

- Tron Legacy = movie license tie-ins. After watching the new teaser of the sequel to Tron featuring Jeff Bridge’s character being a dick on a light cycle, it’s only a matter of time until someone makes a new videogame out of it. Here’s a hint to make a quick buck, developers: put in the old Tron arcade game as an unlockable.

- Big videogame presence: last year was filled with Capcom and Insomniac taking centrestage, so why should this year’s comicon be any different? Since comic readers play videogames and videogamers read comics, it’s a surefire way for producers and developers to show off what’s on tap and coming out on the videogame side of things. Games like Uncharted 2, Army of Two: The 40th Day, and Lost Planet 2 are getting more playtime and attention, while even small fares like The Behemoth’s Game 3 gets a shout-out. Would this somehow translate well into this year’s Singapore Comic Bazaar Convention? If the local distributors and bigwigs like Microsoft and EAÂ play their cards right, it could fill up the occupancy at Suntec City’s Convention halls.

- Xbox 360 Avatars get new gear.

With a Halo anime and this yet-to-be-categorized-into-a-genre experience from the Xbox dashboard, I’m surprised they haven’t pimped their latest brand of cereal. Brute Berries and Cortana Crunch, anyone?
