It’s going to be a busy week, with October issue’s workload slowly piling into a cluttered flim-flam mess. Throughout the past week or so, we did manage to play extensive sessions of three downloadable games for the PS3 and Xbox 360 (it’s our job, remember?). What’s our take on them? Just scroll down below as we share some tidbits on Shadow Complex, Fat Princess, and Trials HD.
Shadow Complex (Xbox 360)

- Imagine Super Metroid remade by a bunch of Americans, and you get Shadow Complex as a result. It’s this generation’s 2D non-linear-ish platformer where you get a huge sense of accomplishment collecting bits and pieces of armor and items to transform your weenie of a white shirt-wearing male protaganist into a double-jumping, rocket-shooting, foam-spewing, and supercharged-running powerhouse. Try cramming that sentence at the back of the box, Microsoft. Oh wait…..
- Pity the bosses aren’t so memorable or fun to fight. As you get decked with the best equipment, killing off Shadow Complex’s towering robot bosses is nothing more than a war in spamming the sub-weapons button as much as you can. At least the last fight is cool.
- That bit where you indirectly kill off a bunker full of Shadow Complex soldiers in the middle of the game? Priceless, and sombre.
- Regardless of whether the big name sci-fi writer associated with the game is an alleged homophobe, it doesn’t change the fact that Shadow Complex is worth the dough. There aren’t that many Metroidvania-style games out these days, and Shadow Complex fills that void pretty well.
Fat Princess (PS3)

- At the beginning of the game, it’s always better to start slow and use Workers to upgrade your bases. The first base to upgrade? Usually the Worker’s, as the Engineer class can have access to bombs which happen to be pretty devastating if you throw it point-blank at someone. The Archer’s base is also good to upgrade first, as their close-range shotgun weapon can kill off weakened opponents walking away from the battlefield.
- Fat Princess is all about organized chaos. Between the mish-mash of teammates and enemy team members fighting at the centre of the map trying to get into each other’s bases for the princess, always remember to try to pay attention. For all you know, a single lone Worker can just sneak up and climb over the walls of your base via a ladder.
- Like all team deathmatch-centric/objective games like Team Fortress 2 or Enemy Territory, you will need a good team of people with headsets to communicate.
- Don’t forget to keep feeding the princess you’re holding captive with lots of cake. I joined quite a number of groups the past weekend and a lot of people forget to do this, leaving me in charge of resource-gathering and cake-feeding.
Trials HD (Xbox 360)

- If you combine the late 80s Excitebikes game on the NES with the graphics of today, you get Trials HD. You drive from left to right jumping hurdles and speeding through the course without wiping out. It’s a lot harder than it sounds.
- You see, the game’s physics will work against you. Which brings into play the Left and Right inputs; they help tilt your bike in a way so that you don’t fall off and balance until you get a perfect bike footing before careening off through the track.
- If you can’t tell by the demo, the game is balls-out hard. How hard, you may ask? Imagine redoing the same track 50 or so times because you fell on your ass trying to get over a bunch of tires and flaming hoops.
