Straight from the press releases we got just after the announcement, Sony just announced the new name of its upcoming Motion Controller. No, it’s neither the Arc nor Gem as dubbed by the internet. It’s called the Playstation Move. Sony of America’s senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille said in the GDC 2010 Sony press conference that “previous motion devices have used controllers simply as pointers or mice – ours becomes an extension of your body. We’re approaching this like a virtual platform launch.” Peter also explained that the Move will be available by itself, with the Playstation Eye, and as part of an upcoming PS3 bundle.

According to reports from various news outlets (i.e the ones who can afford to go to GDC), the Move controller has fewer buttons to work with (meaning it’s less confusing and less daunting for newbies), has its own rechargeable system like the PS3 controller, has no two wires connecting both the Move and its subcontroller, and doesn’t have a motion sensor detection (meaning it’s probably less clunky in translating motion than the Wiimote/Nunchuk). Again, this isn’t final until its release later this year.

So far there’s no price on the thing yet, but the Playstation Eye/Move bundle comes to less than US$99. We’ll have to admit, it’s sure as hell a nice short name that’s perfect for marketing spins and is free from early internet ridicule.

Seems like a rip off from Wii. And the bulb thing look silly. Kind of like a baby’s hand toy.
