The Official Word On What’s Happening At GameAxis

Posted in General

I understand that there’s been a lot of crosstalk and chatter in forums and other online social connected grapevines regarding the fate of one popular local gaming magazine, namely GameAxis. To put to rest any rumors, gossip, or hearsay about what is happening and what will happen to your friendly neighborhood gaming publication, here is the official statement from our publisher SPH Magazines.

SPH Magazines consolidates its gaming strategy

SPH Magazines Pte Ltd (SPH Magazines) today announced a shift in its gaming content strategy. With effect from September, it will strengthen the content of its gaming website www.gameaxis.com. At the same time, SPH Magazines will suspend its gaming lifestyle magazine GameAxis Unwired in Singapore after its August issue.

This move will allow the publisher, already the leader in tech publications like HWM and HardwareZone.com, to consolidate its resources to deliver more gaming content online while retaining a familiar style of writing that GameAxis readers have grown accustomed to.

However, GameAxis Unwired fans who prefer a glossy magazine format will not be left out. Following the suspension of the magazine, GameAxis Unwired will continue its presence in HWM, the monthly tech title. HWM will introduce a regular Software section which will include a strong gaming component from its September issue onwards.

Mr. Eugene Low, Deputy Managing Director of SPH Magazines, says:“Incorporating gaming content into HWM will allow us to provide more value to our loyal readers and advertisers. For the same price, our readers will be rewarded with more enjoyable reads on a monthly basis. On the same note, advertisers can also reach out to more readers with this new content segment. This will further strengthen the position of HWM as one of the most respected tech magazines in Singapore.”

All staff members of GameAxis Unwired will be retained and redeployed within SPH Magazines.

HWM with the new Software section will be available from September 2010. The Malaysia edition of GameAxis Unwired will continue to be published monthly.

To anticipate and answer some further questions that are bound to come up:

1. No. We’re not closing shop.
2. GameAxis Unwired Singapore will cease publication as a print magazine with the August 2010 issue being the final issue – so make sure you grab it when it hits the shelves.
3. We will be focusing on strengthening our online presence as well as community. So, GameAxis.com will remain as the home of GameAxis, and from August 2010 onwards, all future news, previews/reviews and opinion pieces will be published online instead of being split between the website and the magazine.
4. GameAxis Unwired Malaysia will continue to be published monthly as a magazine…in Malaysia of course.
5. HWM magazine will begin to feature a new Software section from its September 2010 issue that will incorporate some of the awesomeness of GAXU before, so if you do like your glossy periodicals, you’ll want to move over to HWM for your monthly dose of tech and games.

I guess that’s all for now.

Oh dear. I will be sorely missing Gameaxis Unwired when I get your final print issue later this August.

It is also ironic that Unwired would turn seven years old this August 2010. Wow, even I am surprised at myself for being a reader of Gameaxis Unwired for the past six years plus.

Perhaps it is like what they say, “The end brings about a new beginning.”
