The Razer StarCraft II Trifecta Peripheral Playtesting

Posted in Hands-On

So, Razer invited moi to check out their upcoming StarCraft II-specific products in their humble abode. I’m sure some of you are interested in how the partnership between them and Blizzard went in regards to making the ultimate StarCraft II gear, right?

Razer Spectre Mouse

Just looking at it will make you think that the silver mouse took a trip back in time. It looks glorious and sleek from afar; the sidelights and back glow make it all the more attractive. As soon as I held it, well; that’s when I realize that it’s really not the kind of mouse you use for every kind of gaming session.

When Razer mentioned that this mouse is tailored specifically for RTSs, they weren’t kidding. Generally, RTS players do not rest their palms onto the mouse they use; instead, they use the tip of their thumb and pinkie finger to grip the sides while the rest of their fingers do all the clicking and whatnot. As a result, the perfect mouse for these special breed of pros need to be as light as a feather. In other words, the rest of us gamers will not be so fond of how light and hollow it feels. At least it’s designed ambidextrously; left-handed players aren’t left out of the loop.

There are other options available to customize this featherweight:. You can change the force on your leftclick button; either make it less or more sensitive so that you can control your APM count for your right hand. It’s a nice touch for those who wish to control the response of their left-clicking abilities.

Granted, I’m not a fan of incredibly light mice, but for RTS players who play with their palms raised, it’s perfect. The mouse is worth $129.90.

Razer Marauder Keyboard

Just looking at this bad boy, even in a prototypical stage, gave me goosebumps. It’s really stylish and sturdy, with its sidelight design , shape, and form. You’ll also notice from the pictures that the keyboard eschews the numeric keypad in favor of a smaller design that’ll fit snugly on your table. Even if Razer tailored the keyboard for RTS gamers who don’t use the numeric keypad at all, it’s also good for many of us who only use the left side of the keyboard more often than the right.

The keys on the board are raised and its texture reminds me of the material used on the Razer Lycosa. The fact that they’re raised up and spaced close to each other just makes it easy for anyone to get accustomed to its tactile feel. It’s not mechanically-made, but it’s sturdy enough for repeated tapping.

As a huge bonus, every single button can be programmed as a macro command. The problem with other keyboards offering separate macro buttons is that you’ll need you condition your keyboard hand to figure out where the macro buttons are. For the Marauder’s case, all you need to know is where the assigned macro is on a layout you’re familiar with since you’ve started using the computer.

As first impressions go, the Marauder kicks enough tail to be on any self-respecting gamer’s desk. Keyboard’s retailing at $189.90.
