Razer Banshee Headphones
They’re alright, I guess. It’s got a nifty design. They feel comfy around the ears. Sound output’s nice. I really can’t say much more than that, save for the fact that they at least look aesthetically pleasing that their last pair of headphones that even the Lucky Charms leprechaun would vomit at disgust by just looking at it. But sweet christ, it’s $189.90.
How It All Comes Together
All three devices will come with a special driver that links everything together. The sidelights on each peripheral aren’t for show (well, they can be). When you set up the APM-Lighting System on each of them, all of them will change color according to how high your APM is. For instance, the keyboard will change its lighting to red when you’re busy defending your base against a huge armada of Carriers and Corsairs, while it’ll cool down to white when you’re just building up your resources. Not only do these help indicate the state of the match you’re in, but a regular session will become a nice light-show for people watching you with all your SCII equipment.
The lighting can also be set up to alert you of StarCraft II-specific problems. For instance, the keyboard will start flashing up to three times in blue instantly if your base is under attack. So far, there are about 13 in-game alerts you can set up. It’s a nifty feature in case you somehow miss the “Your Base Is Under Attack†alert. And you’ve got your usual keyboard macro setup, mouse sensitivity and dpi-tweaking, and headphone-equalizing tools to fiddle around with.
What Now?
The three StarCraft II peripherals seem like a nifty setup. That is, if you’re willing to fork out $509 for the whole finished set. Keep in mind that said products are tailored just for StarCraft II; it’s a shame that Razer aren’t planning on making them compatible somehow with other RTSs on the the market.
I mean, you can on a physical level, but Razer isn’t planning on making any future drivers that can make the alerts work with RTSs like the Command & Conquer and Dawn of War series. Still, if you aren’t too inclined to collect them all, the keyboard could be the stand-out item among the trio.
The three peripherals will be out this October. Do wait for an upcoming full-blown review of the final build of these peripherals on Hardware Magazine.
