This Week In Releases/Games: Slim (Guitar) Pickings

Posted in General

Guitar Hero 5 (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2)

Rock out again with Activision’s color-matching rhythm game, as now you get to play as Carlos Santana and Kurt Cobain playing popular rock hits. New features include bringing songs from Guitar Hero World Tour into your hard drive, a way to save band members should they fail, and more group-related band challenges and new modes. You know, what Rock Band did ages ago before World Tour hit (except the last point, to be fair).

SoulCalibur: Broken Destiny (PSP)

Finally, the SoulCalibur series makes its onto the PSP, just like how Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection did. This version of SoulCalibur is a trunched-up version of SoulCalibur 4. Only on a portable, and with a new mustache-heavy character.

PS3 Slim (PS3, duh)

For a really slim price of $488 (according to a few stores, anyway), you get to have your brand new skinny and slightly lighter PS3, with 120GB worth of space to store things in. Kinda odd that we haven’t received any news from Hong Kong about this; guess they’re going for America and Japan first.

Section 8 (Xbox 360, PC)

section 8

Imagine if you blend in Battlefield and Tribes in one multiplayer-heavy game, you’ll get a mix called Section 8. Sure, it is distributed by SouthPeak Games, who aren’t well-known for churning out decent games, but who knows? This could be a surprise hit. Am I being too optimistic though?

Mini Ninjas (PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii)

Don’t knock this supposed kid’s game out to the gutter; I was surprised at how kitschy and charming the game is with its interchangeable characters and adventure-slash-platforming bits.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Wii)

I talked about the game on the last E3 coverage. In essence, it’s a heavy hack-and-slash adventure with two different characters, yet does not solve the repetitious loop set by its Norse-influenced predecessor, Odin Sphere. Looks pretty though.

Defense Grid: The Awakening (Xbox 360)

defense grid

A fancy-looking Desktop Tower Defense game. I think this version used to be on the iPhone. Unlike past tower defense games, this one has its graphics tweaked up to use up what remaining space they have for being DLC to the XBLA.

Fate/Unlimited Codes (PSP)

Yet another fighting game on the PSP, this one is based off of the Fate/Unlimited anime. It’s also done by Capcom, so you can hopefully expect some good, clean 2D-mesh-with-3D medieval fighting action.

With all this in tow, it’s a wonder that I still have any money left. Yeesh. Nonetheless, I’m still in knee-deep with Batman: Arkham Asylum, testing out Hard mode now. It’s a kick-ass game, but can get a little easy on its default setting. If you can, get the limited edition one: it’s got a Batarang attached to it.
