Ubisoft Ventures Into Film and TV

Posted in General

Ubisoft has made the decision to take control of all future cross-media adaptations of their intellectual property by making the move to set up their own film studio. The game developers have already had one of their titles, Prince of Persia made into a movie by Disney starring Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role.

While fans of Prince of Persia might not be happy with the treatment meted by the movie to the source material, there is no question that $335 million grossed worldwide is no flippant matter and may have swayed Ubisoft’s decisions.

Ubisoft’s Paris-based film division is going to be headed by Jean-Julien Baronnet, former CEO of Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp. Gallic producer Didier Lupfer (”Gainsbourg”) is in charge of production and development, while Jean de Rivieres, former topper of distribution at Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures France, will handle marketing and international sales.

Ubisoft could be sitting on a potential gold mine since its games have fleshed out storylines and hence would lend themselves to the big screen extremely well. Both Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell have strong lead characters and an engrossing plot that would easily translate their video game success into box office dollars. It also helps that both games also have rabid fanbases and would lap up any new offering in seconds.

The switch from  video game to film has not been successfully made as of yet but Ubisoft definitely finds themselves well placed. Here’s hoping we hear news about possible TV shows and Movies soon.

Espionage is a perfect fit for the silver screen. Spliter Cell TV show anyone?
