It’s been a while since we’ve had one of these Soapboxes, but let’s break the silence. There’s nothing really hard-hitting to note right now; it’s just light commentary on the hot news that’s transpired this week.
- PS3 Slim & Price Cut: General response to this range from “about damn time” to, well, I think that’s it. It’s nice and all that the PS3 gets a legitimate price cut, but I can’t help but feel that the new Slim looks a little, how shall we say, “plasticky” and flimsy. Oh yeah, and extra demerit points for no backwards compatibility with PS2 discs.
- Fable III? Really?: As much as I enjoyed Fable II for a short bit, I doubt Fable III might turn the heads of most gamers if they have the “you can do it if you want to” gameplay when it comes to raising a family or sleeping with a bunch of hookers. The carrot on the stick method of game mechanics are there for a reason: to entice players to do action “A” so that he/she gets reward “B” to boost your character’s stats or get other sort of bonuses. Getting a family and raising a kid gives you jack squat save for that self-satisfactory feel and emotion that people in reality don’t give a damn about when playing a game, if it’s shoved straight down your throat.
Bile aside, let’s hope Peter Molyneux can get that concept through his showboating head of his.

- A New WOW Expansion Pack Announced At BlizzCon ‘09: For those who played WoW since its inception, well you’ll probably have a helluva time with the new races and fighting off a pretty bad-ass last boss in my humble opinion. For the rest of us, this could also mean that we now know the reason why Starcraft II and Diablo III isn’t out yet. Lord knows if Blizzard can juggle three games and make sure they come out at least the middle of next year. Yes, that’s how bad they are with releasing games. Still, they’re known to deliver the best, so who am I to argue?
- Punch Demons In The Face In Diablo III: Thanks to the Monk class introduced at BlizzCon, now you can. I don’t know why this is appealing to me, but it just is. Maybe it kinda rekindles that same feeling when I (a) punched someone so hard (with good stats) in Fallout 1 & 2 that enemies get mutilated, and (b) my Monk character in Baldur’s Gate 2 blows people up into gibs when I use Flurry of Blows or just put on an Ogre’s Belt to maximize my Strength. Thanks for that, Blizzard.
That’s all for today; spill your guts on the forums to voice out your thoughts on the Slim or the WoW expansion (then again, you probably have). Oh, and for those playing Shadow Complex on your Xbox 360s, if you’re planning on getting 100% on items-collecting for the game, after you get a late cutscene where you flip a switch and activate a large bridge, don’t follow the blue line objective and just explore the rest of the area. Trust me on this. And for those playing Fat Princess on the PS3, I’ll say this: upgrade your Engineers, for the bombs they get to use when upgraded can make or break the game.

well, if they call it a Slim and has excess fat trimmed, you have to make a few sacrifices. Personally, i’m not really bothered with the b/c, but there are some who probably do care. and it is a known fact that the higher ups at Sony do tend to backpaddle when it comes to their comments (about b/c and Dualshock).
what Kichigai pointed out is true: this is the first time they admitted publicly to not having b/c this time around. better late than never in admitting things :)
on an unrelated note, i’m more concerned with the news of the Belzar chip. anyone care to clarify if that’s true or not? piracy’s already happening on the xbox360 and wii; it’s only a matter of time until the ps3 got its turn.
At this time, it’s pure conjecture. And I might say a lot of BS for now. This month is really the right time I’ve ever heard about it and when you look at it’s supposed feature set, the PS2 boot support is most suspect. As we’re talking about BC here, the current PS3s don’t even have the Emotion Engine chip anymore, which is why it doesn’t have PS2 BC, how will this Mod chip enable it? Emulation?
The other things are more likely, but until they finally go one sale somewhere with some people having used it, then we’ll see where it stands.
Extra demerit points for no backwards compatibility with PS2 discs you say; YOU SERIOUSLY ARE AN IDIOTIC XBOX FANBOY TOFFEE!
I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH IT WHY SHOULD YOU?!
EPIC FAIL COMMENT MADE BY YOU!
So just because you don’t have a problem with it, why should he? Isn’t your comment hugely even more biased? Toffee mentioned that without PS2 backcomp, the Slim earns some demerit points, a valid fact that people everywhere is debating online. You on the other hand, simply pointed out that because you don’t have a problem with it, he shouldn’t either.
I also noted that you didn’t point out the second rant in his post is about Fable III, a Microsoft exclusive. Is the Xbox fanboy complaining about an Xbox game? It cannot be true. Toffee also gave hints and tips at the end of the post for Shadow Complex and Fat Princess. Our last Play It First Event, which Toffee hosted was KOFXII on the PS3 – a game he loved a lot. Understand that GameAxis is a gaming website, we’re gamers, we’re not fanboys, we report and present the facts, and our thoughts for all consoles and games.
I would like to see some intelligent comments going on here such as the value or lack thereof of this feature or that instead of blatant, FANBOY FANBOY messages that adds nothing to the conversation. Either be constructive and prove your point, or your comments will be moderated.
Here let me start. The PS2 has been and still is one of the most successful consoles of all time, and that is because of backwards compatibility with PS1 games. Even till now, three years after the PS3 launched, PS2 titles and PS2 consoles are still sold right beside current gen systems. So we shouldn’t ever underestimate the power of backward compatibility.
An intelligent conversation would probably start up by an analysis of the reasons why Sony might have decided to remove backward compatibility (BC) for the Slim. Pool information from the net to share with the community. 1) cost savings from laser to cpu/gpu, the Slim Cell processor has been reduced even more (though it’s now on a 45nm process) 2) No PS3 today except the original 20GB/60GB models have BC so the Slim’s not that much of a surprise. Except Sony’s actually come out to say this time that there will never be BC.
