One of these characters will turn evil in the sequel. Because having an unexplained 'heel' turn helps with the shock value that's normal for this generation's storytelling abilities in videogames.
As you have heard, the Tales of Vesperia: First Strike movie is out in Japanese cinema and will probably be in the midst of being fan-subbed and torrented like mad. In a recent Q&A held before the premiere of the movie in Kadokawa Cinema, Shinjuku, Namco Bandai Games general manager Makoto Yoshizumi says that there’s a desire to make a part 2 to the original Tales of Vesperia game. He also stated that he and his team already have thoughts on another feature film based on the franchise. “I don’t know when it will happen,” Yoshizumi said, ” but we’d like to show [these thing] in video form.”
While my fellow RPG gamers and I would love to see another Tales of Vesperia game, let us not forget how botched-up the sequel to Tales of Symphonia was when it came out last year. Here are a few pointers on what Namco Bandai can do to make Tales of Vesperia 2 awesome:
- Take ideas from Star Ocean 4: It’s no secret that the ‘Star Ocean’ and ‘Tales Of’ series are stepbrothers when you take their development history into account. Both of them have similar battle systems that focuses on real-time and action elements. The recent Star Ocean has a pretty neat experience-earning system: do well in battle by performing long combo chains and finishing foes off with super attacks net you multipliers which boosts the experience earned and increases the chance of getting better drops. Tales of Vesperia 2 can add in an incentive for people to participate in battles, if it keeps things fresh.
- At the same time, don’t: On the other hand, the stories told by Tri Ace are poorly-paced and slow in build-up. How many of you played Star Ocean 4 and Valkyrie Profile 2 and skipped the cutscenes just to get to the battles? I rest my case. Tales of Vesperia’s problem is that the entire narrative is laced out with too much exposition. Granted this is mostly a Japanese-to-English localization thing, but if you don’t have the option to skip the dialogue, you will have a lot of people reconsidering on buying the sequel.
- Don’t make this just for fans: The reason Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World got away with sales is because it’s catered for the fans. From the recycled story and art assets to the gimping of the game, it’s no wonder that new RPG gamers who bought this game traded it away for something more coherent and substantial. Mass Effect had a compendium that can be accessed anytime during the game for people who are confused with the in-game lingo and backstory. It’s high time JRPGs do this: make sure the summary of part 1’s story is made available for reference with Tales of Vesperia 2.
- At the same time, make sure fans recognize it: The battle system, the characters, the slight political overtones: these are the things that made Tales of Vesperia talked about by RPG gamers. The sequel should at least make the return visit memorable and not end up as a deja vu experience. Character cameos should make sense in context and not be all about pandering. The battle system should have a few tweaks in terms of controls, movement, and A.I management, but at the same time should largely remain the same.
That’s just a few ideas Namco Bandai should implement for their supposed sequel (which is highly dependent on how many copies the PS3 version sold and how much the movie earned). Do you readers have other thoughts in regards to this?
